Firefox treating HTML page as download
Submitted by fotios-dev on Wed, 2008-11-19 22:40.A friend reported to me he was having this issue. A PHP generated HTML page that displayed properly on Internet Explorer would not display at all on Firefox - instead the browser would offer to download the page as if it was a zip or something.
Drupal 4.7.x session issues after upgrade to PHP 5.2.x
Submitted by fotios-dev on Thu, 2008-10-30 20:49.Basically the session kept getting reset with every hit and I had to re-login every time.
This is an issue of Drupal 4.7.4 and below with PHP 5.2 and above. The fix is rather simple: upgrade to the latest version of 4.7 which currently is 4.7.10
VoIP, ISPs and Eolo
Submitted by fotios-dev on Mon, 2008-09-29 19:55.After someone voiced his concerns that his VoIP experience had deteriorated in quality over the first year the following discussion among myself and a few other people ensued (mine in blue).

Hi,
I also use EOLO but I have the 3M/1M type of connection. I have had it for almost a year in Ranco and the quality of service (e.g. speed) has remained at the same very good level throughout.
I suspect that what is happening is that the bandwidth shared by low-end connection users (e.g. the 3M/256K contracts) is now being actively contented for by the increased number of users in that category.
CPU gate length, clock frequency and heat dissipation
Submitted by fotios-dev on Mon, 2008-09-15 06:04.Basically, the smaller the gate length, the better the heat dissipation (or the less hot the chip gets) at a certain clock frequency. Therefore, assuming heat sinking technology is constant, a smaller gated chip can withstand higher clock frequencies without burning.
HSMs capable of securely executing custom code
Submitted by fotios-dev on Thu, 2008-09-11 00:25.This type of HSM (Hardware Security Module) is a pretty rare animal, especially if one
- is only interested in HSMs that are NIST validated to at least FIPS 140-2 Level 3
- is looking for such HSMs that come in PCI form factor as well (and not just as a network appliance)
After exhaustively going through this NIST page I only found the following:

Secure system building: architectures and tools
Submitted by fotios-dev on Mon, 2008-09-08 22:22.Some interesting approaches in secure system architectures and tools for building such systems:

Folder default action: a major Windows annoyance
Submitted by fotios-dev on Mon, 2008-09-08 17:50.I recently found out that by merely adding a custom action (see windows explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types) for the "file folder" entity, and I assume the "folder" entity as well, the default action (what happens when you double-click that folder) changes from the default to one of the other already defined actions - not even the newly defined one; on top of that, and this is the really annoying part, there is no easy way to change it back to the default which is of course to "explore" the folder?!
There are three possible ways to resolve this in Windows XP:
Windows vs Linux viruses
Submitted by fotios-dev on Sun, 2008-09-07 19:27.There have been some virus attacks in the organization where I work. On a mail-list based discussion some smart-ass posted the usual "we should move to a platform that doesn't get infected by viruses" implying a move to Linux.
Now, such black-white statements are obviously wrong - wrong not just because there is a number of successful Linux viruses (although the number is massively less than the number of Windows viruses) but because there are good arguments that show that if windows systems were to be completely replaced by Linux ones the number of Linux viruses and discovered Linux vulnerabilities would increase dramatically.
Dealing with file synchronization errors due to "multiple connections" type of errors
Submitted by fotios-dev on Mon, 2008-08-11 18:34.I was intermittently getting this error when trying to synch my offline files with their remote windows server based versions. It was frustrating in that it manifested itself in a non-repeatable manner (i.e. I could not nail down the set of conditions that triggered or caused it).
Obviously this error can be encountered for different reasons (e.g. different usernames being used for connecting to the same server, multiple connections from the same user, etc.), however, getting rid of it always comes down to being able to kill smb/cifs sessions or connections on demand.
After looking into it I found out that there does not seem to be an easy way to do that on the client; nevertheless I have used the following procedure with sucess. Each step assumes that the previous have also been performed.
