A timid 4th of July

This used to be a happy day for me. I today find myself celebrating in a reserved manner however. Maybe it is because I see the poison of fascism gripping the Western World once more - excuses abounding as has always been the case historically. Maybe it is because I see the effects of capitalism, consumerism and individualism, driven by their Hobbesian advocates, beginning to have an impact that is more negative than positive. I don't know where all this will end up but I sometimes feel the fear of what is to come deep in my bones.

Having said all that, I really believe that there still is only one nation in the world today that can make the dreams of all of us come true. If only it had a better political guidance and steered clear off the temptations of pride, arrogance and sanctification of one's own culture and history...
